The Ultimate Mother’s Day Celebration Proverbs 31:28 A Guide for Sunday School Kid’s Ministry

Mother’s Day is that one special Sunday a year when we get to shower the amazing women in our lives with extra love, hugs, and maybe even a slightly messy breakfast in bed! Whether it’s your Mom, Grandma, Aunt, or a special guardian, today is all about saying, “Thank you for being my hero.”

But have you ever wondered why we celebrate Mother’s Day? Or are you looking for the perfect way to make her smile this year? Grab some crayons, put on your “helper hat,” and let’s dive into our Mother’s Day Special!

The Story of Mother’s Day

Did you know that Mother’s Day hasn’t been around forever? While people have honored mothers for thousands of years, the Mother’s Day we celebrate today started with a lady named Anna Jarvis in the early 1900s.

Anna wanted a way to honor her own mother’s memory and all the sacrifices mothers make for their children. She started by giving out white carnations (which were her mom’s favorite flower). Soon, the idea spread all over the world! Today, it’s a day to celebrate the “heart of the home.

Beautiful Bible Verses for Kids to Learn

These verses are short and easy for children to memorize or write inside a handmade card:

  • Exodus 20:12: “Honor your father and your mother.” (The Golden Rule for kids!)
  • Proverbs 31:28: “Her children arise and call her blessed.”
  • 1 Corinthians 16:14: “Do everything in love.” (A great reminder of why we help Mom.)
  • Proverbs 3:5: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” (A verse many moms pray over their children.)

3 Famous Bible Moms to Talk About

You can tell these stories to show kids that God has used mothers in amazing ways throughout history:

  1. Jochebed (Moses’ Mom): She was very brave. She protected baby Moses by putting him in a basket in the river to keep him safe. She trusted God to watch over him.
    • Lesson: Moms are brave protectors!
  2. Hannah (Samuel’s Mom): She was a woman of prayer. She asked God for a son and promised to give him back to God’s service. She kept her promise and visited Samuel every year with a new coat she made just for him.
    • Lesson: Moms pray for us every day!
  3. Mary (Jesus’ Mom): She was obedient. When the angel told her she would be the mother of God’s Son, she said “Yes” to God. She stayed by Jesus’ side through his whole life.
    • Lesson: Moms help us follow God!

Bible-Based Activity Ideas

1. The “Fruit of the Spirit” Garden

Scripture: Galatians 5:22-23

  • The Idea: Have kids draw a flower pot. Each flower in the pot represents a “Fruit of the Spirit” they see in their Mom (like Love, Joy, Peace, and Kindness).
  • The Goal: It helps kids recognize that Mom’s love is a reflection of God’s love.

2. “Armor of God” for Moms

Scripture: Ephesians 6:10-17

  • The Idea: Talk about how Moms are like soldiers for God. They use the “Shield of Faith” to protect the family and the “Sword of the Spirit” (the Bible) to teach us the truth.
  • The Goal: Kids can draw their Mom wearing “spiritual armor” like a superhero!

Quick Discussion Questions

If you are teaching a group, ask these to get them thinking:

  1. How does Mom show us God’s love at home?
  2. What is one “brave” thing your Mom has done for you?
  3. How can we “honor” our parents this week without being asked?

What Does the Bible Say About Moms?

At Sunday School, we learn that God gave us families to take care of us and show us His love. One of the most important verses about parents is found in the Ten Commandments:

“Honor your father and your mother…” — Exodus 20:12

To “honor” someone means to show them great respect and love. We honor Mom when we listen to her, when we help her, and when we pray for her.

Another beautiful verse is Proverbs 31:28“Her children arise and call her blessed.” That just means that when kids see how hard their mom works, they say, “Wow, I am so blessed to have you!”

Game Time: The “How Well Do You Know Mom?” Quiz

Sit down with Mom and see if you can guess the answers to these questions. You might learn something new about her!

  1. What was Mom’s favorite subject in school when she was your age?
  2. If Mom could have any superpower, what would it be?
  3. What is her favorite vegetable (and does she actually like it, or just eat it because it’s healthy)?
  4. What is her favorite memory of you when you were a baby?
  5. What is her favorite way to relax?

A Special Prayer for Mom

If you want to talk to God about your Mom today, you can say tell God about how grateful to have her as your mom.

“Dear God, thank You for my Mom. Thank You for the way she takes care of me and for all the times she makes me smile. Please help her to feel very special today. Give her strength when she is tired and fill her heart with joy. Help me to be a good helper and to show her love every single day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

A Message to the Kids

As you go through your Mother’s Day, remember that the most important thing you can give isn’t a toy or a card—it’s your time.

Moms love it when you sit and talk with them. They love it when you say “please” and “thank you.” And they really love it when you help pick up your toys without being told!

So today, give an extra-long hug. Draw a picture that shows your family together. And most importantly, tell her: “I love you, Mom!”

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful Moms, Grandmas, and Teachers out there!
