Mother’s Day is a beautiful opportunity to pause and celebrate the incredible women God has placed in our lives. Whether they are moms, grandmas, aunts, or mentors, these “spiritual mothers” reflect God’s love in a unique and powerful way. We encourage families, honor mothers, and point children toward the ultimate source of love—our Heavenly Father.
The Heart of a Mother: A Reflection of God’s Love
When we look at the love of a mother, we are catching a glimpse of how much God loves us. In the Bible, God often uses the imagery of a parent’s care to describe His own devotion to us. Isaiah 66:13 says, “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.”
Mothers are often the first examples of servant leadership that children see. They work tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to ensure their families are fed, clothed, and, most importantly, known and loved. This selflessness is a living example of the Gospel in action.
Why We Celebrate Today
We don’t celebrate Mother’s Day just because it’s a tradition; we celebrate because the Bible tells us to “Honor your father and your mother” (Exodus 20:12). Honoring someone means showing them high respect and great esteem. Today, we make it a priority to say “thank you” for the countless sacrifices made out of love.
Biblical Lessons on Motherhood
The Bible is filled with stories of mothers who demonstrated incredible faith, courage, and wisdom. Sharing these stories with children helps them see that being a “mom” is a high calling from God.
1. Jochebed: The Protector (Exodus 2)
Jochebed was the mother of Moses. When his life was in danger, her faith and bravery led her to hide him and eventually place him in a basket in the Nile. Her quick thinking and trust in God saved the future leader of Israel.
- The Lesson for Kids: Moms protect us and want the very best for our future, just like Jochebed did for Moses.

2. Hannah: The Prayer Warrior (1 Samuel 1)
Hannah wanted a child so badly that she prayed fervently to the Lord. When God gave her Samuel, she dedicated him back to God’s service. Her story shows the power of a mother’s prayer.
- The Lesson for Kids: Our moms pray for us! Their prayers are a powerful shield over our lives.

3. Mary: The Humble Servant (Luke 1)
Mary was chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus. She accepted this massive responsibility with humility, saying, “I am the Lord’s servant.” She raised Jesus, watched Him grow in wisdom, and stood by Him even at the cross.
- The Lesson for Kids: Mothers help us grow in our relationship with Jesus by pointing us toward Him.

5 Simple Ways Kids Can Honor Mom This Week
Honoring Mom doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. Often, the things that mean the most are the things that come from the heart.
- The “Acts of Service” Challenge: Instead of waiting to be asked, look for one chore Mom usually does and do it for her. Maybe it’s clearing the table, putting away laundry, or picking up toys.
- A Handwritten Prayer: Write a short prayer for Mom and read it to her. Thank God for her patience, her hugs, and her snacks!
- The “Words of Affirmation” Jar: Take a few slips of paper and write one thing you love about Mom on each one. Put them in a jar or a cup for her to read throughout the week.
- Quality Time: Offer to do Mom’s favorite activity with her. If she loves walking outside, grab your shoes and join her!
- A “Fruit of the Spirit” Award: Look at the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Which one does your mom show the most? Is she full of Patience? Kindness? Gentleness? Make her a “medal” out of paper to tell her why she won that award.
A Special Prayer for Mothers
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of mothers. We thank You for the way they care for us, teach us, and love us with a love that reflects Your own. We pray that You would give them strength when they are tired, wisdom when they are unsure, and peace when they are worried. Let them feel Your favor today and every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
For the Teachers & Ministry Leaders
If you are looking for ways to integrate this into your classroom or digital materials, remember that our goal is always to encourage the “Heart of the Home.” We prioritize clear and polite communication in everything we do to show respect to the families we serve.
As we release new digital materials and curriculum bundles, we always aim to make them affordable and easy for you to print. For those using our Mama Bread lessons or the 52-Week Curriculum Bundle, consider adding a special “Mother’s Day” shield activity where kids can draw what they love most about their moms!
A Note on Sensitivity
We recognize that Mother’s Day can be a sensitive time for some. Some children may have lost a mother, have a difficult relationship, or are being raised by grandmothers or foster parents. In your ministry, aim to use inclusive language like “the women who love and care for you.” Every child should feel they have a “spiritual mother” in the church family to celebrate.

💡 Big Idea: God uses fierce, faithful women to protect, praise, speak wisdom, take risks of faith, and pass the faith on. He can grow those same virtues in all of us.
📖 Memory Verse: Proverbs 31:25 — “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”
