The waves are tossing your ship like a tiny toy, the sky is completely black, and suddenly—CRASH! The ship strikes a sandbar and begins breaking apart into pieces. Your only option is to jump into the freezing cold water and swim for your life, grabbing onto broken planks of wood just to stay afloat.

This isn’t the plot of a Hollywood movie; it is exactly what happened to the Apostle Paul in the book of Acts!

Bible Crafts – Paul’s Shipwreck and Snake Bite (Acts 27:9-28:6)

The Dramatic Castaway Landing (Acts 28:1-2)

Our story opens right after the terrifying shipwreck. Paul and all 276 people on board managed to scramble onto the shores of a tropical island called Malta. They were soaked to the bone, shivering from the cold rain, and completely exhausted

The Bible tells us that the islanders who lived there didn’t run away or treat the castaways like enemies. Instead, they showed unusual kindness. Because it was raining and freezing cold, the islanders built a massive campfire right there on the beach to welcome every single survivor.

Teacher’s Insight: God often provides for us through the unexpected kindness of strangers. Even when everything around us feels like a total shipwreck, God is already preparing a place of warmth and safety for us.

Active Icebreaker Game: “The Life Preserver Toss”

Before diving into the teaching, get the kids moving with a shipwreck-themed game.

  1. Divide your classroom into two teams. Use blue painter’s tape on the carpet to create a “shoreline.”
  2. Have children stand behind the line and take turns tossing small beanbags or plastic rings (the “life preservers”) into laundry baskets labeled “Safety Boats” placed a few feet away.
  3. The Point: Explain to the kids that just like the survivors needed a safe place to land, God always provides a safe refuge for us when we are going through a storm.

The Campfire Surprise (Acts 28:3-6)

Paul wasn’t the type of person to sit back and watch everyone else do the work. Even though he was a prisoner on his way to Rome, he immediately started gathering brushwood to help keep the fire burning. But as he laid a bundle of sticks onto the roaring flames, the heat drove a hidden creature out of the wood.

A venomous snake fastened itself directly onto Paul’s hand!

The Island's View: "He survived the sea, but justice is catching up to him. He must be a murderer!"
The Reality of Faith: God's protection is greater than the enemy's poison.

When the islanders saw the snake dangling from Paul’s hand, they panicked. They whispered among themselves, assuming Paul must have done something terrible. They stood back, watching closely, waiting for his hand to swell up or for him to drop dead on the spot.

But Paul didn’t scream, cry, or faint. The Bible says he calmly shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects whatsoever! He completely trusted in God’s protective hand. When the islanders saw that he was perfectly fine, their jaws dropped in absolute shock. They completely changed their minds and realized that the power of the living God was resting on Paul.

From Protection to Blessing (Acts 28:7-10)

God didn’t just protect Paul for his own sake—He kept Paul safe so that Paul could become a conduit of blessing to the entire island.

The chief official of Malta, a man named Publius, welcomed Paul and the survivors into his home with generous hospitality. While they were staying there, Publius’ father became dangerously ill with a high fever and dysentery.

Step 1: Paul entered the sick man's room.
Step 2: Paul prayed over him, trusting God's power.
Step 3: Paul laid his hands on him and healed him.

When word of this miracle spread across the island, people brought all the sick and suffering individuals to Paul, and God healed every single one of them. By the time Paul and his companions were ready to set sail three months later, the grateful islanders honored them with gifts and supplied everything they needed for their journey.

The High-Energy Object Lesson: “The Poison-Free Heart”

To make the story of the snake bite unforgettable for your kids, use this simple object lesson using a clear plastic bottle, water, iodine, and bleach.

Materials Needed:

  • A clear glass or plastic bottle filled with clean water (representing Paul’s heart/life)
  • Liquid Iodine (representing the snake’s poison or the world’s troubles)
  • Liquid Bleach in a small cup with a dropper (representing God’s supernatural protection and cleansing power)

Step-by-Step Demonstration:

  1. The Conflict: Hold up the clear water. Explain that Paul kept his heart pure and trusted God. Now, drop a few drops of dark iodine into the water. Watch it turn a murky brown.
  2. The Problem: Tell the kids, “The snake’s bite was meant to fill Paul with deadly poison, just like this dark fluid. Sometimes, bad circumstances, mean words, or scary situations feel like they are poisoning our joy.”
  3. The Victory: Take the dropper filled with bleach and add a few drops into the murky water. Swirl it around gently. Within seconds, the chemical reaction will cause the water to turn completely crystal clear again.

The Takeaway: Teach the kids that when the enemy tries to strike us with fear, sickness, or discouragement, we don’t have to panic. God’s Holy Spirit lives inside of us, and His power instantly neutralizes the poison! We can shake it off into the fire, knowing that God protects and heals.

Application: Putting It Into Practice This Week

Our response to this incredible story boils down to two simple actions that every child can practice starting today:

  • Trust God’s Care: When things go wrong—whether it’s a bad grade, a fight with a friend, or feeling sick—remember that God is your protector. Shake off the fear and trust that He has your back.
  • Bless Others with Kindness: The islanders showed unusual kindness to strangers, and Paul used his gifts to heal the sick. Look for ways to show kindness to someone who is having a hard day this week.
