That is exactly what happened in the city of Samaria long ago in the Bible. But just when things looked completely hopeless, God used an impossible promise and four unlikely heroes to perform a gigantic miracle.

A City in Big Trouble
The trouble started when a giant Syrian army marched up to Samaria, surrounded its giant stone walls, and refused to let anyone in or out.
Because no farmers could go outside to tend their crops, the food inside the city completely ran out. People were starving, weak, and scared. Even basic ingredients became so rare that people were paying small fortunes in silver just for terrible things like donkey heads or bird droppings to eat!
The King of Israel walked along the city walls in dark, rough sackcloth, feeling completely defeated. He was so upset that he blamed God’s prophet, Elisha, for all the trouble. “Why should I trust God anymore?” the king yelled.
An Impossible Promise
When the angry king and his royal officer stormed over to Elisha’s house, Elisha didn’t panic. Instead, he smiled and delivered a bold message straight from God:
“Listen to the word of the Lord! By this time tomorrow, a giant bag of fine flour will cost only one silver coin, and two giant bags of barley will cost only one silver coin at the city gate!”
Wait, what? A city with zero food was going to have mountains of cheap food in less than 24 hours?
The king’s special officer sneered. “Ha! Even if God opened up windows in heaven and poured food out of the sky, that couldn’t happen!”
Elisha looked at the officer calmly and said, “You will see it happen with your own eyes, but you won’t get to eat a single bite of it.
Four Unlikely Heroes
While everyone inside the city was hiding and starving, four men were sitting outside the city gate. These men had a painful skin disease called leprosy. Because of their sickness, they weren’t allowed inside the city walls, meaning no one was bringing them food either.
As the sun began to set, the four men looked at each other and had a conversation:
- Man 1: “Why are we just sitting here waiting to die?”
- Man 2: “If we go inside the city, there’s no food. We’ll starve.”
- Man 3: “If we stay right here on this porch, we’ll starve.”
- Man 4: “So let’s walk over to the Syrian army camp and surrender! If they kill us, well, we were going to die anyway. But if they show us mercy, we get to live!”
It was a risky plan, but it was their only chance. They dusted off their robes and began tip-toeing through the dark toward the enemy camp.
The Giant Phantom Army
What the four men didn’t know was that God had already fought the battle for them!
Earlier that evening, God made the Syrian soldiers hear a terrifying sound. To the Syrians, it sounded like thousands of galloping horses, crashing chariots, and a massive roaring army marching right toward them!
“OH NO!” the Syrian soldiers shrieked. “The King of Israel hired giant foreign armies to destroy us!”
Panic erupted! The enemy soldiers didn’t even pause to grab their shoes, armor, or weapons. They ran away into the night as fast as their feet could carry them, leaving their entire camp completely intact.
Feast in the Dark
When the four men with leprosy crept into the first tent, they gasped.
The oil lamps were still lit. The tables were piled high with warm bread, roasted meats, fruit, and sweet drinks. There wasn’t a single Syrian soldier in sight!
The starving men dove in! They stuffed their mouths with food, drank their fill, and laughed with joy. Then they found bags of shiny silver, gold, and fancy clothes. They carried the treasure out, buried it in the dirt to keep it safe, and ran into a second tent to feast some more!
But after stuffing themselves, one of the men stopped and looked at the others.
“Hey… what we are doing isn’t right,” he said. “Today is a day of GOOD NEWS, and we are keeping it all to ourselves! The whole city is starving inside those walls. If we wait until morning, we’ll be punished. Let’s go tell the king right now!
The Midnight News Flash
The four men scrambled back to the city walls and shouted up to the gatekeepers:
“Hey! We went to the Syrian camp! Nobody is there! The horses are tied up, the tents are full, and there is food everywhere!”
The gatekeepers shouted the message up to the palace. King Joram jumped out of bed, but he was suspicious. “It’s a trap!” he warned. “They are hiding in the bushes waiting for us to come out!”
One of his smart advisers said, “Let’s send five horses and a couple of chariots to check it out. If it’s a trap, we aren’t any worse off than we are right now.”
The scouts rode out into the night. They followed the trail all the way to the Jordan River. Sure enough, the entire road was strewn with blankets, coats, and gear that the panicked Syrians had thrown off while running away!
The Miracle Comes True
When the scouts galloped back and confirmed the camp was abandoned, the city gate flew open!
A giant wave of hungry people rushed out of the city like a waterfall. They ran straight into the Syrian camp and carried back piles of grain, flour, and treasure.
By that afternoon, just as Elisha had promised, a big bag of fine flour was sold for just one silver coin at the city gate! God’s word came true down to the very last detail.
And what about that grumpy royal officer who didn’t believe God? The king had put him in charge of guarding the gate, but the giant, excited crowd knocked him over and trampled him. He saw the unbelievable miracle with his own eyes, but he never got to taste the food—exactly as Elisha said.
