King Jehoshaphat Trusts God, 2 Chronicles 20 Bible Stories for Kids Ministry

Hey there, awesome friends! Welcome back to our kids’ blog corner. Have you ever faced a problem that felt way too big for you to handle? Maybe it was a scary test at school, a tough situation with a friend, or feeling completely overwhelmed. When big problems show up, what’s the first thing you want to do? Panic, right?

Well, today we are looking at a true story from the Bible found in 2 Chronicles chapter 20 about a king named Jehoshaphat. He faced a terrifying crisis—an army of massive enemy nations coming to attack him. But instead of panicking, King Jehoshaphat threw an absolute faith-filled praise party, and God won the victory in the most unusual way! Let’s dive in!

A Scary Surprise for King Jehoshaphat

Let’s set the scene. Jehoshaphat was the king of Judah, and he loved God and tried to do the right thing. But one day, terrible news arrived at the palace. Messengers burst in shouting, “A massive army from Edom and Moab is coming to attack you! They are already marching around the Dead Sea, and they are almost here!”

Imagine how Jehoshaphat felt. His heart probably raced a million miles an hour. The enemy army was huge, and Judah’s army was tiny compared to them. Jehoshaphat was terrified!

Now, here is the first cool lesson: When Jehoshaphat was scared, he didn’t try to fix it all by himself or run away.Instead, he decided to look straight to the ultimate problem-solver—God!

A Nationwide Prayer Meeting

King Jehoshaphat immediately called for a nationwide emergency meeting. He told all the people of Judah to stop whatever they were doing, gather together in Jerusalem, and fast (which means choosing not to eat for a little while so they could focus completely on talking to God).

Men, women, and even little children gathered at the temple of God. Then, King Jehoshaphat stood up in front of everyone and prayed out loud. It was a powerful, honest prayer. He basically said:

“Lord, God of our ancestors, You are the ruler of everything in heaven and earth! We are facing a giant, terrifying enemy army, and we have no idea what to do. We are totally powerless against them… BUT OUR EYES ARE ON YOU!”

Picture that for a moment. A whole city of people looking up to heaven, admitting they couldn’t do it on their own, and asking God for help. That takes a lot of humility and a lot of trust.

God Answers in the Middle of the Crowd!

While everyone was standing there quietly waiting, something incredible happened. The Spirit of the Lord came upon a man named Jahaziel right there in the crowd. He stepped forward and shouted God’s answer to the king and all the people:

  • “Listen, King Jehoshaphat! Listen, everyone in Judah!”
  • “Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this massive army.”
  • “For the battle is not yours, but God’s!”
  • “Tomorrow, march out against them, but guess what? You won’t even need to fight in this battle! Just stand firm, hold your ground, and watch the rescue of the Lord!”

Can you imagine hearing those words? The battle belongs to God! You don’t have to fight; you just get to watch God work! The people were so relieved and filled with faith that they immediately bowed down with their faces to the ground and began worshiping God, praising Him with loud and joyful voices.

The Strangest Army Strategy Ever

The next morning, the people of Judah woke up early and got ready to march out to the desert of Tekoa to face the enemy.

Now, if you were a general in an army, what would you put at the very front of your marching line? Probably your toughest, strongest soldiers carrying big shields and sharp swords, right?

Well, King Jehoshaphat and God had a very different idea.

Jehoshaphat consulted with the people and appointed a choir. Yes, you heard that right! He put singers at the very front of the army! They didn’t have armor or weapons; they had instruments, voices, and hearts full of praise. As they marched toward the terrifying enemy camp, they sang out loud:

  • “Give thanks to the Lord, for His faithful love endures forever!”

Can you picture it? An army marching into a warzone, not with war cries, but with a worship concert!

God Shows Up in a Big Way!

The moment the people of Judah began to sing and praise God, something miraculous happened behind the scenes.

God caused total confusion among the enemy armies. The different enemy groups (who were actually uneasy allies) turned on each other! They started fighting among themselves, and by the time the choir and the people of Judah marched up to the watchtower in the desert, they looked out over the battlefield and saw… nobody.

Every single enemy soldier had destroyed one another. Not a single person had escaped!

When the people of Judah walked into the valley, they didn’t find a battle. Instead, they found an unbelievable amount of wealth—valuables, clothing, and precious items left behind by the enemy. In fact, there was so much stuff that it took them three whole days just to gather it all up!

On the fourth day, they gathered in a valley called Beracah (which means “Blessing”) and praised God together for His incredible rescue. Because they trusted God, the whole region was filled with peace.

What Can We Learn Today?

This powerful, true story teaches us three amazing lessons that we can use in our lives every single day:

  1. It’s okay to feel scared, but bring your fears to God: Jehoshaphat was terrified, but instead of panicking on his own, he prayed and asked God for help. When you feel overwhelmed, talk to God right away!
  2. The battle belongs to God: When you face big problems—like a hard situation, fear, or bullies—remember that you don’t have to fight everything in your own strength. God is bigger than any giant you will ever face.
  3. Praise is a powerful weapon: Choosing to thank God and sing His praises, even when things look tough, shifts our focus off our problems and onto how great and powerful God is!

So, the next time a big problem pops up in your life, remember King Jehoshaphat and the praise party in the desert. Stand firm, keep your eyes on God, and watch Him do wonders!
