Bible Story: The Women Who Traveled with Jesus (Luke 8:1–3)

Most people know about the 12 disciples, but there were also three amazing women—Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Susanna—who left their homes to follow Jesus, care for the team, and share God’s love!

Meet the Women Who Followed Jesus
Long ago, in the sunny, dusty land of Galilee, something incredible was happening. Jesus was walking from town to town, village to village, bringing the most wonderful news anyone had ever heard. He spoke about God’s big love, healed people who were sick, and taught everyone how to love their neighbors.
When you picture Jesus traveling through the countryside, who do you imagine walking beside Him? You probably think of His twelve famous disciples—like Peter, James, and John. But if you were standing on the dusty road watching Jesus walk by, you would have seen a much larger group!
Right alongside the twelve men was a brave group of faithful women who packed their bags, left their homes, and traveled with Jesus wherever He went. Three of the most well-known women in this group were named Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Susanna.
This is the story of who they were, how they cared for Jesus, and why their big hearts made a huge difference in the world.
Meet the Three Helpers
Each of these three women came from very different places, but they all shared one big thing in common: they loved Jesus and wanted to help Him share God’s love with everyone.
- Mary Magdalene: Mary lived in a town called Magdala right near the Sea of Galilee. Before she met Jesus, Mary was very sick and had a really hard life. But when Jesus saw her, He cared for her and healed her completely! Mary’s heart filled up with so much joy and gratitude that she promised to follow Jesus for the rest of her life. She became one of His closest, most devoted friends.
- Joanna: Joanna’s life was completely different from Mary’s. Joanna’s husband, Chuza, had a high-paying job as the manager of King Herod’s palace! That meant Joanna lived in a huge, fancy house, wore beautiful clothes, and had plenty of money. But Joanna realized that fancy things and palace life couldn’t fill her heart the way Jesus’ teachings did. She decided to leave the comfort of her home to support Jesus on the road.
- Susanna: We don’t know as many details about Susanna’s family, but the Bible makes sure we know her name because she was such a faithful helper! Susanna was generous, kind, and ready to lend a hand whenever the team needed help.
Life on the Open Road
Imagine traveling on foot every single day with a giant group of people! There were no cars, buses, or grocery stores around the corner. Every evening, the group needed food to eat, water to drink, and a safe place to sleep.
Who do you think made sure everyone was taken care of? Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, and the other women!
The Bible says these women supported Jesus out of their own personal resources. That means they used their own money, food, and supplies to buy bread, fish, vegetables, and warm blankets for Jesus and the disciples. While Jesus was busy preaching on the hillsides and healing people in the town squares, these special helpers worked hard behind the scenes.
They prepared meals, set up places to rest, organized supplies, and made sure Jesus and His disciples were healthy and strong so they could keep doing God’s work. They were real-life team players who made the whole journey possible!
A Big Heart in a Changing World
In those long-ago days, women were not usually allowed to travel around with religious teachers or learn alongside men. Many people thought women should only stay at home and stay out of sight.
But Jesus didn’t look at people the way the rest of the world did. Jesus welcomed Mary, Joanna, and Susanna with wide-open arms! He treated them with respect, taught them God’s Word, and made them an important, valued part of His ministry team.
Jesus showed everyone that in God’s kingdom, everyone matters. Boys and girls, rich and poor, young and old—everyone has an important role to play!
Brave All the Way to the End
The ultimate proof of how much these women loved Jesus happened during the scariest times. When angry leaders arrested Jesus and took Him away, many of the male disciples panicked and ran away to hide.
Do you know who stayed close by? Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and their women friends!
They stood near the cross with heavy hearts, crying and praying for Jesus. They made sure they knew where His body was laid in the tomb. Early on Sunday morning, while it was still dark outside, Mary Magdalene and the other women woke up, gathered sweet-smelling spices, and walked to the tomb to care for Jesus’ body one last time.
Because of their faithfulness, they received the best surprise in human history! When they arrived, the heavy stone was rolled away, and angels in glowing clothes told them the amazing news: Jesus was alive!
Jesus even appeared directly to Mary Magdalene first! He gave her a special mission: to run back and tell the rest of the disciples that He had risen from the dead. Mary became the very first person in the whole world to proclaim the happy Easter news!
What We Can Learn Today
The story of Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Susanna reminds us that you don’t have to be a famous preacher or stand on a stage to do big things for God.
- God gives everyone unique gifts: Joanna used her wealth, Mary used her deep gratitude, and Susanna used her helpful spirit. God gives you special talents too!
- Every act of kindness matters: Serving a meal, sharing your toys, helping clean up, or encouraging a friend are all powerful ways to serve Jesus.
- Love stays brave: True friends stick together even when things get tough.
No matter how young or small you are, you can be a special helper just like Mary, Joanna, and Susanna!
