Have you ever tried playing hide-and-seek with someone who could see through walls? It would be pretty impossible to win, right? No matter which closet you hid in or which blanket you ducked under, they’d find you instantly!
That is almost exactly what happened thousands of years ago in the Old Testament. But this wasn’t a game of hide-and-seek. This was a real-life showdown between a sneaky king, a giant army, and a quiet prophet who trusted God completely.

The King’s Sneaky Plan Keeps Failing!
Our story starts with the King of Aram. He was at war with Israel, and he really, really wanted to win.
So, he gathered his generals and whispered a secret plan: “Tonight, we will set up our camp near the river! When the King of Israel marches by, we’ll surprise him!”
It seemed like a foolproof trap. But there was just one problem: God knows everything. God knows what people are thinking before they even say it out loud!
God had a prophet named Elisha living in Israel. Whenever the sneaky King of Aram set a trap, God warned Elisha: “Tell the King of Israel not to go near the river today. The enemy is waiting for him!”
Elisha passed the message along, and the King of Israel safely avoided the trap.
This didn’t happen just once. It happened twice, three times, four times! Every single time the enemy king tried to ambush Israel, Elisha warned the king, and Israel escaped completely unharmed.
“There’s a Spy in My Camp!”
By this point, the King of Aram called all his officers together for an emergency meeting.
“Who is the snitch?” he roared, pounding his fist on the table. “Which one of you is secretly giving information to the King of Israel?”
One of his servants raised a timid hand. “None of us, my lord the king! It’s not a spy in our camp. It’s Elisha, the prophet in Israel. He tells the King of Israel the exact words you whisper in your private bedroom!”
The king was stunned. He realized that if he wanted to beat Israel, he had to capture Elisha first.
He asked, “Where is this prophet?”
His spies answered, “He is staying in a small town called Dothan.”
The king smiled a cold, mean smile. “Send the horses. Send the chariots. Send a huge army! We are going to surround that town in the middle of the night so Elisha can’t escape!”
Surrounded by Horses and Chariots
That night, while the town of Dothan was fast asleep, thousands of soldiers marched under the moonlight. Chariots rolled silently across the dirt, and horses stomped around the entire perimeter. By sunrise, the town was completely trapped.
Early the next morning, Elisha’s young servant woke up, rubbed the sleep from his eyes, and walked outside with a pitcher to fetch water.
He looked up toward the hills—and his heart stopped.
Every ridge, every hill, and every road was packed with soldiers. Sunlight gleamed off thousands of swords, spears, and shields. The enemy was everywhere!
Terrified, the servant dropped his water pitcher and ran back inside to Elisha.
“Oh no, my master! What shall we do?” he cried, his voice trembling.
Elisha didn’t panic. He didn’t jump up and grab a sword. He didn’t even look stressed! He calmly turned to his terrified servant and said words that we should all remember when we feel scared:
“Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!”
The servant must have thought Elisha was crazy. More than them? There are only TWO of us in this house, and there are THOUSANDS of them out there!
The Secret Fire Army
Elisha knew his servant couldn’t see the full picture with his physical eyes. So, Elisha looked up and prayed a very simple prayer:
“O Lord, open his eyes so he may see.”
Instantly, God touched the servant’s eyes, and his spiritual vision was opened.
The servant looked back at the hills surrounding Dothan—and what he saw was incredible! Filling the mountains all around Elisha were hundreds of thousands of horses and chariots of FIRE! God’s angelic army was standing guard, far outnumbering the enemy army below.
The servant realized right then that no matter how scary things looked on the outside, God’s protection was infinitely greater!
The Surprise Twist: A Different Kind of Blindness
As the enemy army started marching down the hill toward Elisha’s house, Elisha stepped out to meet them. But he didn’t ask the fire army to burn them up. Instead, Elisha prayed to God again:
“Strike this army with blindness.”
Blink! Blink!
Suddenly, all the soldiers began stumbling into one another. They dropped their spears and held out their hands, groaning in confusion. God had temporarily blinded every single soldier in the army! They couldn’t tell left from right, up from down, or friend from foe.
Elisha walked right up to the commander of the blind army and said, “You came to the wrong city, and this isn’t the man you’re looking for! Follow me, and I will lead you to the person you want.”
Like a giant line of ducklings, the thousands of blind, helpless soldiers took hold of one another’s shoulders and let Elisha guide them step-by-step.
Where did he lead them? Right into Samaria—the heavily fortified capital city of Israel, surrounded by Israelite guards!
Kindness Defeats the Enemy
Once they were all standing inside the center of the capital city, Elisha prayed one more time: “Lord, open the eyes of these men so they can see.”
Blink! Blink!
The soldiers opened their eyes, expecting to capture Elisha. Instead, they looked around in horror and realized they were standing in the middle of their enemy’s stronghold, completely surrounded by Israel’s strongest warriors! They were trapped!
The King of Israel was thrilled. He turned to Elisha and raised his sword. “Should I strike them down, my father? Should I destroy them?”
Now, most armies in history would have said, “Yes! Destroy them!” But Elisha had a much better idea—a God-idea.
Elisha said, “No! Do not kill them. Would you kill prisoners you captured in battle? Set out food and water for them so that they may eat and drink, and then let them go back to their master.”
The King of Israel obeyed. Instead of a battle, he threw a giant feast! He served delicious bread, fruits, roasted meats, and fresh water to the very army that had come to destroy them.
The enemy soldiers ate until they were full. They were amazed, humbled, and overwhelmed by the kindness shown to them. When they finished their meal, the King of Israel sent them safely back home to Aram.
And do you know what happened next? The Bible says that after that day, the armies of Aram stopped raiding the land of Israel!
Kindness and mercy did what swords and spears could never do: it turned enemies into peace!
Bible Crafts – Elisha and the Army of Syria (2 Kings 6:8-23)
Craft One: Fiery Chariot
You will need:
- Paper Plates
- Construction paper or cardstock
- Glue or tape
- Streamers or tissue paper
- Scissors
- Decorative elements as desired
- Markers or crayons
Procedure:
1. Cut the plate to somewhat resemble a chariot, and add colors and images to complete the look.
2. Cut wheels out of paper or cardstock, and attach to the plate.
3. Add streamer “flames” to the chariot to resemble fire, and other elements (horse, driver, etc.) as desired.
4. Add verses or captions, and use the chariot to recall the amazing events of 2 Kings 6.
Craft Two: “Blind Goggles”
You will need:
Crayons or markers
- Glue or tape
- Stickers or decorations
- Construction paper or cardstock
- Scissors
Procedure:
- Cut the paper or cardstock into the shape of glasses.
- Place a covering over the glasses that can flip up or down.
- Decorate the glasses (goggles) with color, stickers, etc.
- Add verses and captions to the coverings or a separate paper, and use to remember the blindness that God gave the enemies at Elisha’s request!

God blinded the enemy army…but Elisha saw God’s salvation!
What Can We Learn from This Story?
- God’s Angels Are Watching Over You: When you face something scary—a dark room, a tough test, or mean kids at school—remember Elisha’s words. You are never alone! God and His heavenly protection are always with you, even when you can’t see them.
- God Fights Our Battles His Way: We often want to fight back when people are mean to us. But God’s way is always better. He can take a scary situation and completely turn it around!
- Love Your Enemies: Elisha showed Jesus-like love long before Jesus was born on earth! Rom. 12:21 tells us, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Feeding the enemy army brought peace!
The next time you face a tough challenge, pray Elisha’s prayer: “Lord, open my eyes!” Ask Him to help you see His power, His love, and His plan!
