Hey Kids! Have you ever looked at the very last cookie in the jar and wished it would just… multiply? Or have you ever been worried that you didn’t have enough of something—maybe enough time to finish your homework or enough snacks for a long car ride?
Today, we are going on a journey back to the time of the Old Testament to meet a prophet named Elijah and a very brave mother. It’s a story about a drought, a miracle, and a God who is much bigger than an empty pantry.
The Big Dry-Up
Our story starts with a problem. A big, dusty, thirsty problem.
There was a king named Ahab who wasn’t following God. Because of this, God told the prophet Elijah to give the king some bad news: “It’s not going to rain for a long, long time.”
Think about that for a second. No rain meant no water for the corn to grow. No water for the cows to drink. The rivers started to dry up, and soon, everyone was very hungry and very thirsty. But God told Elijah not to worry. First, God sent ravens (big black birds) to bring Elijah bread and meat every morning and evening. Imagine having birds as your personal delivery service!
But eventually, even the creek where Elijah was drinking dried up. So God gave Elijah a new mission: “Go to a town called Zarephath. I have commanded a widow there to feed you.

The Last Meal
When Elijah arrived at the gates of the city, he saw a woman gathering sticks. She looked very tired and very sad. Elijah called out to her, “Could you bring me a little water in a cup? And please, bring me a piece of bread, too.”
The woman stopped. She looked at Elijah with big, worried eyes. “I promise you,” she said, “I don’t have any bread. All I have is a tiny handful of flour in a jar and a little bit of oil in a jug. I’m gathering these sticks to cook one last meal for me and my son. After that… we won’t have anything left to eat.”
This was a “Mission Impossible” moment. She only had enough for one more tiny muffin, and then her food would be gone.

A Very Strange Request
Now, what Elijah said next might sound a little bit selfish at first, but it was actually a test of faith.
Elijah told her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you said. But first, make a small cake of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son.”
Wait… what? Elijah wanted her to give him the food first?
But then Elijah gave her a promise from God: “The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.”

The Miracle in the Kitchen
The widow had a choice. She could say, “No way, Elijah! My son is hungry!” or she could trust that God knew what He was doing.
She chose faith.
She went home and used that last bit of flour and that last drop of oil to bake a little bread for Elijah. Then, she reached back into the jar to see if there was anything left for her son.

Clink. Her scoop hit the bottom… but it wasn’t empty! There was more flour. She tilted the oil jug… and more oil poured out!
Every single day for the rest of the drought, the same thing happened. She would reach into the jar, and there was just enough flour for that day. She would pour the oil, and there was just enough for that day. God didn’t give her a giant warehouse full of food all at once; He gave her exactly what she needed, exactly when she needed it.

A Scary Turn of Events
One day, something very scary happened. The widow’s son got very, very sick. He stayed in bed, and eventually, he stopped breathing.
The widow was heartbroken. She cried out to Elijah, “Why did this happen?”
Elijah didn’t have all the answers, but he knew who to talk to. He took the boy up to the room where he was staying and laid him on the bed. Elijah prayed a very earnest prayer: “Lord my God, let this boy’s life return to him!”
Elijah stretched himself out over the boy three times, crying out to God. And guess what? God heard Elijah’s prayer! The boy’s breath came back, he opened his eyes, and he sat up!
Elijah picked him up, carried him downstairs, and handed him to his mother. “Look,” Elijah said with a big smile, “your son is alive!”
The mother was so happy! She said, “Now I know for sure that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth.

What Can We Learn from the Flour Jar?
This story is full of “God-moments” that we can remember when we are feeling worried:
- Give What You Have: The widow didn’t have much—just a handful of flour—but when she gave it to God, He made it enough. God can take our “littles” and turn them into “bigs!”
- Trust One Day at a Time: God didn’t fill the jar to the top for the whole year. He gave her “daily bread.” This reminds us to trust God for what we need today and not worry too much about tomorrow.
- God Cares About Families: God didn’t just care about the famous prophet Elijah; He cared about a poor widow and her son in a small town. He knows your name, and He cares about your family, too!
- Nothing is Too Hard for God: Whether it’s making oil appear out of nowhere or bringing a boy back to life, God is the King of Miracles.
Let’s Think About It!
- If you were the widow, would it have been hard for you to give away your last bit of food?
- How do you think the son felt when he saw the flour jar stay full every morning?
- What is something you can “give” to God this week? (Maybe a kind word, your time, or a helping hand?)
A Prayer for This Week
Dear God, thank You for being our Provider. Thank You that even when we feel like we don’t have enough, You are more than enough for us. Help us to have big faith like the widow and to trust You one day at a time. We love You! in Jesus’ name Amen!
