God Used Ravens to Feed Elijah 1 King 17
Have you ever been really, really hungry? Maybe you were waiting for dinner to be ready, or you forgot your snack for soccer practice. Your stomach start growls, and all you can think about is a sandwich or a piece of fruit.
Now, imagine there was no food in your house. Imagine there was no food in the grocery store! That is exactly what happened in the land of Israel a long time ago. But in the middle of this big problem, God did something so strange and so amazing that people still talk about it today.
The Grumpy King and the Brave Prophet
Our story starts with a man named Elijah. Elijah was a prophet, which is a fancy way of saying he was God’s “special messenger.”
At that time, Israel had a king named Ahab. King Ahab was not a very nice leader. In fact, he stopped listening to God and started worshiping a fake god named Baal. This made God very sad because He loved His people and wanted them to stay safe and do what was right.
God told Elijah to go to the King and give him a very serious message: “Because you have turned away from God, there will be no rain or even dew for years until I say so!”

The Secret Hideout by the Creek
Without rain, the grass turns brown, the flowers wilt, and—most importantly—the food stops growing. King Ahab was very angry with Elijah for bringing this news. Elijah needed a safe place to go.
God told Elijah, “Go east and hide by Kerith Ravine. You can drink from the brook, and I have ordered the ravens to feed you there.”
Now, if you were hiding in a canyon, what would you expect to eat? Maybe some berries or some roots? But God said he was sending Ravens.

Wait… Birds are Delivering Dinner?
Ravens are big, black, smart birds. But there is one thing you should know about ravens: they love to eat! Usually, if a raven finds a piece of bread or a bit of meat, it gobbles it up right away. They aren’t known for sharing their snacks.
But when God gives a command, even the birds listen.
Every single morning, as the sun began to peek over the hills, Elijah would hear the flap-flap-flap of wings. A group of ravens would fly down, carrying bread and meat in their beaks just for him. And every evening, they would do it again!
Why Did God Use Ravens?
God could have made food appear out of thin air. He could have had a kind neighbor bring Elijah a picnic basket every day. So why use birds?
- To show His power: God wanted Elijah to know that He is the King of everything—even the animals!
- To build trust: Every morning, Elijah had to trust that the birds would show up. He couldn’t “save” food for the next day; he had to rely on God’s provision one meal at a time.
- Because God is creative: God loves to use unexpected things to do big jobs.
What Can We Learn from the Ravens?
Even though we don’t usually get our lunch delivered by birds today, this story has three big lessons for us:
1. God Knows Exactly Where You Are Even though Elijah was hiding in a deep, rocky ravine where nobody could find him, God knew exactly where he was sitting. He knows where you are, too! Whether you are at school, at home, or feeling a little “hidden” or lonely, God sees you.
2. God Provides in “Set Apart” Ways Remember our word Holy (set apart)? God’s help is often set apart from the way the rest of the world works. When the rest of the country was hungry, Elijah was full. When we follow God, He promises to take care of our needs, even if it happens in a way we didn’t expect.
3. Small Things Can Be a Big Blessing The ravens were just birds doing a small job, but they kept God’s prophet alive! This reminds us that we can be like the ravens. We might feel small, but when we share what we have or help someone else, we are part of God’s big plan.
Family Activity: The “Raven Relay”
To help your kids remember this story, try this fun game!
- What you need: Some “bread” (brown construction paper squares) and “meat” (red construction paper circles).
- The Goal: Have your children pretend to be the ravens. They have to pick up the “food” (maybe using a clothespin as a beak!) and fly across the room to drop it into a basket for “Elijah.”
- The Lesson: Talk about how the ravens had to be obedient to God to make sure Elijah was fed.
