“Hey everyone! Look at this. I really want to play with this toy right now, but nothing is happening. It’s completely stuck. Why isn’t it working?

Exactly! It has zero power. In our world, things need power to move, to light up, and to work. Your tablet needs a battery, your lights at home need electricity, and cars need fuel.
But did you know that there are different kinds of power? There is physical power, like a weightlifter lifting something heavy. There is political power, like a king or a president making rules. And in the spiritual world, there is dark, spooky power—and then there is the super-power of God!
Today, we are diving into an incredible true story from the Bible in Acts 16. We are going to go on a wild road trip adventure with two friends named Paul and Silas. They walked into a busy city called Philippi, expecting a normal week of teaching people about Jesus.
But instead, they ran right into a young girl who was trapped by a very dark, spooky secret. She had an evil spirit inside her that let her predict the future, and some mean, greedy bosses were using her to make a lot of money.
Every single day, she would follow Paul and Silas around, screaming at the top of her lungs! It was loud, it was chaotic, and it was a massive showdown between dark power and God’s power.
Today, we are going to see exactly what happens when the name of Jesus goes head-to-head with a dark spirit. Spoiler alert: chains are about to break, lives are about to change, and we are going to learn that Jesus has the ultimate power over absolutely everything!

One day as we were going down to the place of prayer, we met a slave girl who had a spirit that enabled her to tell the future. She earned a lot of money for her masters by telling fortunes.
She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, and they have come to tell you how to be saved.”
This went on day after day until Paul got so exasperated that he turned and said to the demon within her, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And instantly it left her.

Meeting the Trapped Girl
As Paul and Silas were walking to their prayer meeting, this young girl began walking right behind them. In those days, she was a slave girl. That means some mean, greedy bosses owned her like a piece of property and forced her to work for them without paying her.
But that wasn’t her only problem. She was also trapped by something invisible. The Bible tells us she had an evil spirit inside her that gave her a strange ability: she could predict the future!
Because she could guess what was going to happen next, people from all over the city would line up and pay lots of money to hear her fortune. If someone lost their keys, wanted to know if it would rain tomorrow, or wondered if their business would do well, they went to her.
Did the girl get to keep all that money? No, not a single coin! Her greedy bosses took every penny. They didn’t care about her at all; they only cared about filling their deep pockets with cash. She was spiritually trapped by a dark spirit, and socially trapped by mean bosses. She must have felt so lonely, sad, and completely hopeless.
The Loud, Confusing Shout
For days and days, as Paul and Silas walked through Philippi, this girl followed them like a shadow. And she wasn’t quiet about it! She would scream at the top of her lungs so that everyone in the market square could hear her.
Do you want to know what she shouted? You might expect an evil spirit to say something mean or tell a lie, but listen to what she screamed:
“These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved!”
Wait a minute… that sounds like a good thing, doesn’t it? She was telling the absolute truth! Paul and Silas wereservants of God, and they were telling people how to be saved by Jesus.
So, why didn’t Paul turn around, smile, and say, “Hey, thanks for the free advertisement!”?
Because Paul had a special gift from God called spiritual discernment. That’s a big church word that simply means he could see the truth behind what was happening. Paul knew that the voice coming out of the girl wasn’t her own voice, and it wasn’t God’s voice either. It was a dark spirit trying to play a trick.
If the people of the city saw a spooky fortune-teller endorsing Paul and Silas, they might think that Jesus’ power was the same as magical tricks or pagan gods. Paul didn’t want the pure, beautiful message of Jesus mixed up with dark, scary things. Plus, Paul’s heart broke for this poor girl. He didn’t want her to be a loud loudspeaker for the enemy anymore; he wanted her to be free.
The Super-Power in Jesus’ Name
After many days of this constant shouting, Paul reached his limit. He was deeply grieved and upset in his spirit. He turned around, looked directly at the girl—or rather, at the spirit inside her—and didn’t argue, shout, or throw a tantrum. He knew he didn’t have to fight hard, because he had the ultimate weapon: the name of Jesus.
Paul pointed his finger and commanded:
“In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!”
Do you know what happened next? There wasn’t a giant explosion of lightning, and there weren’t any special effects like in a movie. The Bible says that at that very moment, the spirit left her!
ZAP! Just like that, the dark power was completely gone.
Suddenly, the loud, chaotic voices in the girl’s mind stopped. The heavy, spooky feeling vanished. For the first time in years, she could breathe a sigh of relief. Her mind was quiet, her heart was safe, and she was finally, truly free. Jesus had rescued her!
When Doing Good Makes People Mad
You would think that the whole city would throw a massive party, right? A sweet young girl had just been healed! She didn’t have to live with a scary spirit anymore!
But instead of celebrating, someone got super, duper angry. Can you guess who?
Yep—her bosses!
When the bosses realized the spirit was gone, they quickly noticed something else: the girl couldn’t tell the future anymore. And if she couldn’t tell the future, their giant money-making machine was broken. They wouldn’t get rich off her torment anymore.
Instead of being happy that a human being was saved, they were furious that their wallet was empty. Their greed made them completely blind to the beautiful miracle that just happened right in front of their eyes.
In a fit of rage, the bosses grabbed Paul and Silas! They dragged them through the dirt all the way to the city marketplace to face the rulers. They made up lies, started a giant town riot, and got Paul and Silas into major trouble. Eventually, the brave missionaries were beaten and thrown into a dark prison cell with shackles on their feet.
Even though doing the right thing landed Paul and Silas in jail, they didn’t regret it for a second. Why? Because a precious child of God was now free.
Craft Name: The “Chain-Breaker” Rescue Bracelet / Bookmark
This craft allows kids to create a “chain” that represents the things that trap us (like fear, bad choices, or the spiritual darkness the girl experienced), and a main key or cross that represents the ultimate power of Jesus to break those chains!
Materials Needed:
- Construction paper (different colors, cut into strips about 1 inch wide and 5 inches long)
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Glue sticks or tape
- A pre-cut paper “Cross” or “Key” for each child (you can cut these out of cardstock or heavier paper)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Write the Truth: Give each child a few strips of construction paper. On the strips, have them write things that can make them feel trapped, scared, or worried (e.g., Fear, Sadness, Bad Choices, Bullying).
- Decorate the Key/Cross: On their paper Key or Cross, have them write the memory verse or a main truth from the lesson in big letters: “Jesus has the Power!” or “Acts 16:18”. Let them color it and decorate it with stickers or glitter.HTML
- Build the Chain: Show the kids how to loop the first strip into a circle and glue/tape the ends together. Then, slide the next strip through the first circle and glue its ends together to make a paper chain.
- The “Breakout” Moment: Attach the decorated Cross or Key to the very end of the chain.

While the kids are assembling their chains, you can walk around and reinforce the story:
“Remember how the girl in our story was trapped by a dark spirit and mean bosses? She couldn’t break those chains on her own. But the second Paul spoke the name of Jesus, ZAP! The chains broke and she was free! Whenever you look at this craft at home, remember that no matter what worries or scares you, the name of Jesus is more powerful than any chain!”
Awesome Lessons for You to Remember!
This incredible story isn’t just an ancient tale; it teaches us some huge lessons about God today:
- Jesus is the Ultimate Boss: No matter how scary, dark, or spooky something might seem, it is absolutely nothing compared to the power of Jesus. At the mention of His name, bad things have to leave! You never have to be afraid of the dark or bad dreams because Jesus is on your side.
- People Matter More Than Stuff: The mean bosses loved money more than they cared about a hurting girl. But Jesus showed that the girl’s freedom was worth way more than all the gold in the world. God loves you more than anything, too!
- Doing the Right Thing Can Cost You: Sometimes, standing up for what is right or helping someone who is being bullied might make other people mad at you. Paul and Silas ended up in jail for doing good, but God was still with them (and spoiler alert: He later used an earthquake to open the prison doors!).
