This lesson is designed to be highly engaging, interactive, and easy to follow. It breaks down the concept of “honor” into practical, everyday steps that children can easily grasp, while pointing them directly toward the heart of God the Father.
Materials Needed:
- Bibles (or printed scripture sheets)
- A whiteboard or poster board with markers
- For the Object Lesson: A heavy backpack or tote bag, several large books or smooth heavy stones, and a bright, beautiful gift box.
- For the Craft: Colored construction paper, markers, scissors, and glue sticks.
The “Best Gift” Warm-Up
As the children arrive, gather them into a circle. Start with an energetic, interactive question to get them talking and comfortable.
Teacher Script:
“Good morning, everyone! Happy Father’s Day! Today is a incredibly special day because we get to celebrate the men who love us, protect us, and guide us. To kick things off, I want everyone to think for a moment: What is the absolute coolest, funniest, or best gift you have ever given or received? Go around the circle and share!”
(Allow the children to share their answers. Acknowledge their responses with enthusiasm.)
“Those are some amazing gifts! Giving a great gift makes us feel awesome inside because it shows someone how much we care about them. Today, we are talking about a gift that doesn’t cost a single dollar, but it is the greatest thing you can give to your dad, your grandpa, an uncle, or a leader who cares for you. That gift is called honor.”
The Big Word: What Does “Honor” Mean?
Write the word HONOR in big letters on the board.
Teacher Script:
“God gives us a very clear instruction in the Bible about our parents. Let’s look at Exodus 20:12. It says: ‘Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.’
But what does that big word ‘honor’ actually mean? It’s not a word we use every single day at school or on the playground. To honor someone means to show them deep respect, to value them highly, and to show them love through our actions and our words. It means treating them like the treasure they are!”
Interactive Brainstorm:
Ask the kids to call out practical ways they can show respect or value to their dads or guardians at home. Write their ideas on the board around the word HONOR.
Examples to guide them:
- Listening the first time they ask you to clean your room (without whining!).
- Saying “Thank you” when they make dinner or drive you to practice.
- Writing them a kind note just to say, “I love you.”
- Helping out with chores around the house before being asked.
The Weight of a Father’s Care
This visual demonstration helps children understand the daily responsibilities fathers carry and why they deserve our respect and appreciation.
How to run the demonstration:
- Ask for a volunteer from the class to come up and put on an empty backpack.
- Hold up the large books or stones one by one. Label each one with a specific responsibility that fathers manage.
Teacher Script:
“Fathers and guardians have a really big job. They carry a lot of hidden weight every single day to take care of us. Let’s look at what they carry.”
- Hold up the first heavy book: “This book represents Work and Provision. Dads work hard every day to provide a safe home, food on the table, and clothes for us.” (Place it in the backpack).
- Hold up the second book: “This one represents Protection. Dads stay up late making sure the doors are locked, checking on us when we are sick, and keeping us safe from harm.” (Place it in the backpack).
- Hold up the third book: “This represents Guidance. Dads spend time teaching us right from wrong, helping us with homework, and showing us how to follow Jesus.” (Place it in the backpack).
- Ask the volunteer how the backpack feels now. (They will say it feels heavy!)
“It feels heavy, right? Our dads carry a lot of responsibility because they love us so much. Now, see this beautiful gift box? This represents our Honor and Gratitude. When we say thank you, when we obey happily, and when we show them love, it doesn’t take away their responsibilities, but it makes their hearts feel incredibly light and joyful!”
(Hand the volunteer the gift box and have them sit down).
The Ultimate Father: Our Heavenly Father
Transition the focus from our earthly fathers to the perfect love of God.
Teacher Script:
“While we want to celebrate our earthly dads today, we also know that human dads aren’t perfect. Sometimes they make mistakes, get tired, or have a bad day. And some of us might have dads who live far away, or we might be blessed with grandpas and uncles who step in to care for us.
But the most beautiful news in the world is that every single one of us has a perfect Father in Heaven.He never gets tired, He never makes mistakes, and His love for you never, ever runs out.
Jesus told a wonderful story in the Bible to show us exactly what God the Father is like. It’s called the Parable of the Prodigal Son found in Luke 15.”
Storytelling Time (Summarized for Kids):
Tell the story of the son who took his father’s money, ran away to a far country, and wasted all of it on foolish choices. When the money ran out, the son was hungry, dirty, and ashamed. He decided to walk back home, hoping his father would let him just be a servant.
“The son was walking home, covered in dirt, rehearsing his apology. He figured his dad would be furious. But the Bible tells us that while the son was still a long way off, his father saw him.
Did the father wait on the porch with his arms crossed, looking angry? No! The Bible says the father was filled with love and compassion, and he ran out to meet his son! He threw his arms around him, kissed him, and threw a massive celebration party. He didn’t even wait for the son to finish his apology before showing him grace.”
The Core Message:
“That is exactly how your Heavenly Father feels about you. James 1:17 tells us that every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of celestial lights. When you make a mistake, He doesn’t cast you away. When you are hurting, He runs to comfort you. He loves you unconditionally, completely, and forever.”
Craft Activity: The “Father’s Day Trophy” Card
Keep the children engaged with a hands-on, creative project to take home to their father or male role model.
Instructions:
- Have kids fold a piece of construction paper in half to form a card.
- On the front, help them draw or cut out a golden trophy shape.
- Write across the trophy: “World’s Best Dad / Role Model!”
- On the inside of the card, have them write three specific things:
- “Thank you for helping me with…”
- “My favorite memory with you is…”
- “I promise to show you honor this week by…”
Closing Prayer
Gather the children back together for a meaningful, heart-focused conclusion.

“Thank you all for being such amazing listeners today! As you head home to celebrate Father’s Day, remember to give your dad or guardian the best gift possible: your love, your respect, and your honor. Let’s bow our heads and thank God for His incredible goodness.”
Prayer: “Dear Heavenly Father, thank You so much for being our perfect, loving Dad. Thank You that Your arms are always open to us and that Your love never fails. We lift up our earthly fathers, grandpas, uncles, and leaders today. Please bless them, protect them, and give them strength. Help us to show them deep honor and respect through our actions this week. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”
