The Month of Celebrating the Mother’s Day for Christian Kids
The Bible teaches us to love and respect our parents, and Mother’s Day is a special time to show our love for our wonderful mothers!
Christians take seriously the biblical command to “Honor your father and your mother” (Exodus 20:12, Ephesians 6:2). Mother’s Day is a specific time to focus on expressing this honor and gratitude towards mothers.
Mothers are a gift from God, and Mother’s Day is a time to thank Him for the blessing of our mothers. We might pray for them and acknowledge God’s hand in their lives, recognizing their God-given role and the biblical mandate to respect parents, while ultimately giving thanks to God for the blessing of motherhood.
Mother’s Day Children’s Sermon Lesson Ephesians 6 for Kids
Target Age Group: 5-10 years old
Scriptures: Exodus 20:12, Proverbs 31:25-31, 1 Samuel 1:27-28 (Hannah’s thankfulness for her son)
Materials:
- Pictures of different kinds of mothers (human, animal caring for young)
- Construction paper, crayons, markers

Lesson Outline:
Introduction – What is a Mother?
- Start by asking the children: “What is a mother?” Let them share their ideas.
- Show pictures of different kinds of mothers – human mothers caring for their children, a mother hen with her chicks, a lioness with her cubs.
- Explain that mothers are special people (or animals!) who love, care for, and teach their children. They work hard to keep us safe and happy.
- Ask: “Who here loves their mom?” (Most hands will likely go up!) “Why do you love your mom?” Let a few children share.
Bible Story 1: God Tells Us to Honor Our Mothers

- Open your Bible to Exodus 20:12.
- Read the verse aloud: “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” (Explain that “honor” means to show respect, love, and be obedient to them).
- Ask:
- “Who is God talking to in this verse?” (Everyone!)
- “What does God tell us to do for our mothers?” (Honor them)
- “Does God say we should sometimes honor them, or always honor them?” (Always!)
- “What is one way you can honor your mom today?” (Listen to her, help her, say thank you, give her a hug).
Bible Story 2: A Wonderful Mother in the Bible – Hannah

- Open your Bible to 1 Samuel 1:27-28.
- Tell the story of Hannah in your own words (simplified for kids):
- “A long time ago, there was a woman named Hannah who really, really wanted a baby. She prayed and prayed to God. God heard her prayers, and she had a son named Samuel. Hannah was so thankful to God for her son! When Samuel was a little older, Hannah kept her promise to God and brought Samuel to serve God in the temple. Even though she loved Samuel very much, she honored God first.”
- Ask:
- “How did Hannah feel about her son, Samuel?” (She loved him very much!)
- “Who did Hannah thank for giving her Samuel?” (God!)
- “How did Hannah honor God?” (By keeping her promise and letting Samuel serve Him).
- “What does this story tell us about how we can be thankful for the gift of our mothers?” (We can thank God for them!)
Bible Story 3: What a Wonderful Woman! (Proverbs 31)

- Open your Bible to Proverbs 31:25-31.
- Explain that this part of the Bible describes a woman who is very special and works hard for her family. Read a few verses in simple language:
- (Verse 25): “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” (Mom is strong and brave!)
- (Verse 26): “She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.” (Mom teaches us important things!)
- (Verse 27): “She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.” (Mom works hard at home!)
- (Verse 28): “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” (Her family loves and appreciates her!)
- Ask:
- “Do some of these things sound like your mom?” (Encourage them to think about how their mom is strong, teaches them, and works hard).
- “What does it say her children do?” (Call her blessed – meaning they speak well of her and appreciate her).
- “How can we ‘call our mothers blessed’?” (Say nice things about them, thank them).
Activity – Making a “Thank You” Card for Mom
- Give each child construction paper and art supplies.
- Encourage them to draw a picture for their mom or someone special who cares for them like a mother (grandmother, aunt, etc.).
- Help them write a simple “Thank You” message inside, maybe using some of the ideas from the lesson (thanking her for her love, her hard work, her teaching).
- Optional: Let them decorate their cards with stickers, glitter, or yarn.

Conclusion and Prayer
- Remind the children that God wants us to honor our mothers every day, not just on Mother’s Day.
- Ask: “What is one thing you will try to do this week to honor your mom?”
- Lead a simple prayer, thanking God for mothers and asking Him to bless them. Pray for all the children to show love and respect to their mothers and caregivers.
Possible Discussion Questions Throughout the Lesson:
- What are some things your mom does for you?
- How does your mom show you she loves you?
- How can you help your mom?
- What makes your mom special?
Remember to be sensitive to children who may not have a mother figure in their lives. Encourage them to think about other special women who care for them and to honor them as well. This lesson can be adapted to include grandmothers, aunts, or other loving caregivers.
