Free Ten Commandments activities for Sunday school: the pack cover, a solved maze, a preschool I Can Build on Jesus coloring page and the Jesus is the foundation wise builder coloring page

What’s in the free Ten Commandments activities pack

  • Five puzzles for ages 6 to 12: connect the dots, crossword, color by code, find the differences and a maze. Each comes at Level 1 and Challenge.
  • Five Bible story coloring pages for ages 6 to 12, each with its big idea and Bible reference
  • Answer keys for every puzzle, both levels, with the answers in red (pages 21 to 25)
  • Ten preschool pages for ages 3 to 5: a coloring page and an activity sheet each week (pages 26 to 35)
  • The Ten Commandments in plain words on one page, a quick reference for kids working the puzzles (page 5)
  • A printing plan with page numbers for five Sundays, one or two Sundays, and quiet pages (page 4)

The pages are the student handouts from Built Different, a 5-week Ten Commandments series from The Sunday School Store. Three people on the store team made and tested them. Lily, the team’s page tester, works every new activity by hand before it is shared. The coloring and the solved maze in the picture above are her work. Every puzzle page also ends with a “Keep Talking” question for a teacher or parent to ask.

Ten Commandments activities for Sunday school, week by week

Each week is one Bible story. Read the passage from your Bible, then hand out the pages. The series runs from Mount Sinai, through all ten commandments and the golden calf, to Jesus’ story of the wise and foolish builders.

Week 1: God chose His people at Mount Sinai (Exodus 19:1-8)

Big idea: God chose us before He gave us His rules. Puzzle: connect the dots. Level 1 counts from 1 to 20. The Challenge counts by 4s up to 104 and skips the decoy numbers. The finished picture is a treasure chest, because God called His people His “treasured possession” (Exodus 19:5). Preschool: color every heart, then count them. Print: pages 6 to 8, and 26 and 27.

Week 2: God comes first, commandments 1 to 4 (Exodus 20:1-11)

Big idea: God comes first. Puzzle: crossword. Level 1 has picture clues and a picture word bank, so early readers copy each word. The Challenge has written clues and no word bank. Preschool: circle the kids who are praying, singing to God or reading the Bible. Print: pages 9 to 11, and 28 and 29.

Week 3: God’s rules protect the people we love, commandments 5 to 10 (Exodus 20:12-17)

Big idea: God’s rules protect the people we love. Puzzle: color by code. Level 1 needs no reading: color the stars and hearts to find a hidden picture. In the Challenge, kids answer five story questions, then color the squares that hold each answer’s letter. The colored squares spell a hidden word: LOVE. Preschool: draw a line between the pictures that match. Print: pages 12 to 14, and 30 and 31.

Week 4: The golden calf and the God who rebuilds (Exodus 32)

Big idea: Failure isn’t the end of God’s project. Puzzle: find the differences, 5 at Level 1 and 8 in the Challenge. Kids of any reading level can do both. Preschool: look at three pictures, then draw what comes next. Print: pages 15 to 17, and 32 and 33.

Week 5: The wise and foolish builders (Matthew 7:24-27)

Big idea: Jesus is the foundation that never fails. Puzzle: a maze to help the wise builder reach the rock. The Challenge maze has lots of wrong turns, so hand out pencils with erasers. Preschool: find and circle all 5 strong rocks. Print: pages 18 to 20, and 34 and 35.

The memory verse for all five weeks is Matthew 7:24: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (BSB).

How to use these activities in a small, mixed-age class

Every page in the pack tells the same story at different levels. That lets one teacher run one lesson for a 4-year-old and an 11-year-old at the same table.

  1. Tell one story to everyone. Read the week’s passage once, out loud, with the whole group together.
  2. Hand out pages by level, not by age. Give the Challenge puzzle to kids who read well. Give Level 1 to early readers. Give the preschool sheets to children who don’t read yet.
  3. Pair an older child with a younger one. The Level 1 crossword is a good buddy page. The younger child finds the picture, and the older child helps copy the word.
  4. Keep a coloring page ready for early finishers. The coloring page for the week works for every age.
  5. Close with one question. Ask the “Keep Talking” question from the bottom of the puzzle page, like “When you mess up, how can you come back to God instead of hiding?” Preschool sheets have their own “Ask me” question.
  6. Check answers fast. The answer keys on pages 21 to 25 show both levels side by side.

I think mixed-age groups have to work because that’s the reality in so many churches, and there are all kinds of ways around it, like having older kids as the helper or the co-teachers.

What to print for your Ten Commandments Sunday school lessons

Page 4 of the PDF has three lists with page numbers filled in. Pick the one that fits your calendar.

  1. Five Sundays. One story a week, in order. For ages 6 to 12, print three pages a week: the coloring page and both puzzle levels. For ages 3 to 5, print two pages a week.
  2. One or two Sundays on the Ten Commandments. Weeks 2 and 3 cover all ten: commandments 1 to 4 (pages 9 to 11, preschool 28 and 29), then 5 to 10 (pages 12 to 14, preschool 30 and 31). Only one Sunday? Print both coloring pages and let kids choose a puzzle.
  3. Quiet pages. For the church service or early finishers, pages 6, 7, 15, 16, 18 and 19 for ages 6 to 12, and pages 26, 27, 28, 34 and 35 for ages 3 to 5. Staple a few together with a pencil and some crayons.

Printing tip: print on plain letter paper. The preschool activity sheets are in color but still work on a black-and-white copier. Print the answer keys once for the teacher, not for every child. No scissors or glue needed.

Add a Ten Commandments game

Want something active after the pages? The Built Different resources page on this site has free review games for the series, Ten Commandments Charades and Commandments Pictionary, plus a Bible story video for each week and a memory verse video.

Questions about these Ten Commandments activities

Can I copy these for my whole class?

Yes. Print as many copies as your church, classroom, homeschool or family needs. Please don’t sell the pages or post the file on another site. Link to this page instead.

Do I need the full curriculum to use the pages?

No. Every Kids page and every preschool coloring page shows its Bible reference, so you can teach straight from your Bible. The coloring pages and Level 1 puzzles work even for a child who doesn’t know the story yet. The Challenge puzzles are easier after you tell it.

Will these work in a Christian school or homeschool?

Yes. The puzzles work as seatwork or early-finisher pages. At home, read the Bible story, then do the page together and ask the “Keep Talking” question.

Where can I find a printable list of the Ten Commandments for kids?

Page 5 of this pack lists all ten in plain words. For more printables, booklets and lessons, see 10 Commandments for Kids on this site.
