Use this page when your Sunday school class or children’s church gets only 30 minutes. This page gives you a sample 30-minute lesson plan, a way to trim a longer lesson, and a short list of what to get ready the night before. It is for volunteer teachers at small churches with kids ages 3 to 12. The free sample packs below give you complete lessons to try it with this Sunday.
Free Sunday school lesson PDFs you can teach in 30 minutes
The free Kids Curriculum Sample Pack has four complete Sunday school lessons for ages 6 to 12. Each lesson is built like a menu. Pressed for 30 minutes? Teach the Bible story, the discussion and one activity.
- A supply list up front, with the “before class” steps
- The Bible story told in short lines kids can follow, then discussion and prayer
- An opening game and an object lesson that uses one everyday object
- A craft, a coloring page, a word search and a take-home page for parents
- A full-page Bible story picture to hold up while you teach
Teaching ages 3 to 5? The free Preschool Curriculum Sample Pack has six complete lessons. Short on time? Teach the Bible story and one activity.
Teachers tell us how little time they really have. One gets about 45 minutes after the children’s message. Another said that from late November, Christmas program practice takes most of her hour. She keeps 20 minutes for the lesson: the game, the object lesson and the Bible story. A third teaches a ten-minute class with just the group game and the story.
A sample 30-minute Sunday school lesson plan
Here is one way to spend 30 minutes. The times add up to 30.
- Welcome and opening game (5 minutes). Greet each child by name. Play a quick game that points to the story.
- Bible story (10 minutes). Read or tell the story. Hold up the picture so kids can follow.
- Discussion (5 minutes). Ask two or three questions. End with this one: “What did this story show us about Jesus?”
- One activity (7 minutes). Pick a craft, a coloring page or a word search. Just one.
- Prayer and take-home page (3 minutes). Pray together. Send the parent page home.
Keep the Bible story and the discussion whole, because that is where kids hear the good news about Jesus. When time runs short, the activity is the part to cut.
How to trim a 45- or 60-minute lesson to 30 minutes
Cut the extras, not the story. Most longer lessons give you more activities than you need.
- Keep the Bible story and the main point. Read them first, then plan around them.
- Choose one game or the object lesson, not both.
- Choose one activity. Save the others for a week when you have extra time.
- Shorten the discussion to your best two or three questions.
- Send the coloring page or puzzle home with the parent page.
- Watch the clock at the halfway mark. If the story ran long, skip straight to the activity and prayer.
What to prep the night before a 30-minute lesson
Ten or fifteen minutes the night before is enough for a short lesson. Do these in order.
- Read the Bible passage and the story script once, out loud.
- Decide which game and which activity you will use. Cross out the rest.
- Gather the supplies on the list into one bag or box.
- Print the activity page and the take-home page, one per child plus a few extra.
- Pray for the kids by name, and for yourself as you teach.
Praying and letting God’s Word change your own life is the most important preparation, no matter what curriculum you have, how many kids you have, or how many years you’ve been teaching.

30-minute Sunday school lessons for preschool
With ages 3 to 5, keep it simple: the Bible story and one activity. Little ones also need time to settle, so start with something they can play with as they arrive.
Each lesson in the free Preschool Sample Pack starts with arrival play centers. The Bible story is told in simple lines kids can repeat, with prayer built in. Every activity is written for the youngest child in the room. See more ideas on our Preschool Sunday School Lessons page.
