Week by week

A short teacher's guide to each week of Built Different: what the week teaches, what to get ready, and one tip for small classes.

Week 1: God's Blueprint Day at Sinai (Exodus 19:1–8)

Big idea: God chose us before He gave us His rules.

Memory verse: Matthew 7:24 (BSB), "Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock." King James edition: "Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock." This is the verse for all five weeks. Hang the poster from the Series Overview where everyone can see it.

Before Sunday

  • Read Exodus 19:1–8. God reminds His people He carried them before He gives one command.
  • Print the Teacher Edition once and one handout set per child, with the My Blueprint Folder template on cardstock. Cut the Blueprint Card 1 cards apart.
  • Set out 20 to 30 plastic cups per team and draw one plan card per team for the opening game.
  • Draw a simple house on paper and set ten craft sticks beside it for the object lesson.

Small-church tip: If you teach alone, cut out the folders and make your sample before Sunday. In class your hands will be busy helping kids fold and glue.

Preschool: God Picked Me. The takeaway for little ones: I am God's treasure.

Week 2: The Foundation: Commandments 1–4 (Exodus 20:1–11)

Big idea: God comes first: His worship, His name, and rest with Him.

Memory verse: Matthew 7:24, the same verse as Week 1. Say it together once after the prayer.

Before Sunday

  • Read Exodus 20:1–11.
  • Label four of each team's ten cups with masking tape for the opening game. The lesson gives you the four phrases.
  • Test the jar object lesson once with a clear wide-mouth jar, a rock and marbles.
  • Print the First Brick template on cardstock and cut the Blueprint Card 2 cards apart.

Small-church tip: With only a few kids, play Foundation First as one team and let each child place and read one labeled cup. At the jar, one child drops in the rock and another pours the marbles.

Preschool: I Can Put God First. The takeaway for little ones: I can love God most of all.

Week 3: The Walls: Commandments 5–10 (Exodus 20:12–17)

Big idea: God's rules protect the people we love.

Memory verse: Matthew 7:24, the same verse as Week 1. Third week with the same verse. Some kids can say it without the poster now, so let them lead it.

Before Sunday

  • Read Exodus 20:12–17, then the lesson's short note on what to say if a child mentions a broken marriage at home.
  • Bring a soft foam ball and a stuffed animal for the opening game.
  • Bring a bike helmet for the object lesson. Any size works.
  • Print the Load-Bearing Wall base page and brick strips page for each child, and cut the Blueprint Card 3 cards apart.

Small-church tip: Mixed ages? Pair an older child with a younger one for the Load-Bearing Wall. The older one reads each brick label out loud, and the younger one glues the strips from the bottom row up.

Preschool: God's Rules Help Me Love. The takeaway for little ones: I can love my family God's way.

Week 4: The Golden Calf and the God Who Rebuilds (Exodus 32)

Big idea: Failure isn't the end of God's project.

Memory verse: Matthew 7:24, the same verse as Week 1. Fourth week with the verse. Ask a few kids to say it from memory.

Before Sunday

  • Read all of Exodus 32. The lesson sums up the hard parts for children.
  • Set ten cups at each team's table for the Rebuild Relay.
  • Draw a simple house plan on paper and keep clear tape nearby. You will crumple it in class.
  • Print the Renovation Project broken-house page and patch pieces page for each child, and cut the Blueprint Card 4 cards apart.

Small-church tip: Short on time? Drop the Rebuild Relay and keep the Crumpled Plan, which takes five minutes, needs only paper, tape and a marker, and makes the same point. Hand out Blueprint Card 4 even if you skip the craft.

Preschool: God Never Gives Up on Me. The takeaway for little ones: God always loves me, even when I mess up.

Week 5: The Wise and Foolish Builders (Matthew 7:24–27)

Big idea: Jesus is the foundation that never fails.

Memory verse: Matthew 7:24, the same verse as Week 1. This week Jesus says the verse Himself in the Bible story, so point to the poster when you read it.

Before Sunday

  • Read Matthew 7:24–29.
  • Set up the Storm Test: two shallow pans, a flat rock, sand, two toy blocks, a pitcher of water and a towel.
  • Set up two build sites for the opening game, one on bare floor and one on a rug, with 10 to 15 cups each.
  • Print a rock base page for each child and the house page, four houses per sheet. Cut the houses and the Blueprint Card 5 cards apart.

Small-church tip: If you teach alone, set the pans on a towel before class and keep the pitcher out of reach until you pour. The folders go home today, so keep them at your table for the last step.

Preschool: I Can Build on Jesus. The takeaway for little ones: Jesus is strong, and He loves me.

Why I made this unit

Years ago I wrote this on the blog:

The book of Exodus continues to show God's faithfulness in keeping his promise. The promised family grows into a large people group, but they become slaves in Egypt and God must act to rescue them.

That is still why I made Built Different. Kids often hear the Ten Commandments as a list of rules. I wanted five Sundays that show the order God gave them in: He rescued His people first, and Jesus is the Rock we build on. Tony Kummer
