The Vine and the Branches (John 15:1-8) Sunday School Lesson and Activities

Kids need to stay connected and rooted in Christ. Use these lesson plans and activities in your ministry this Sunday. We’ve included teaching plans, crafts, coloring pages, and suggested videos for worship.

Use these free Sunday School lesson to explains that we need to remain constantly connected to Christ. As a branch needs to be connected to the main part of the plant in order to live, we need to be “attached” to the Lord. What does this mean? Being rooted in prayer and Bible reading should be components of our daily life, providing the fuel we need to grow and stay healthy in our faith. This message uses a “fruity” object lesson to illustrate what Jesus described in John 15 with His vine and branches explanation.

We know that Jesus is divine…and we are “de branches”! These fruit-themed crafts remind students of the importance of staying rooted in and connected to Christ. When we stay close to Him, we bear spiritual fruit. Apart from that “vine”, we wither and wane. These crafts include grape themes galore. A grapes versus raisins collage imparts the truth that, while raisins cannot turn back into grapes, we can turn back to God when we stray. A collective effort poster helps a group of children remember that we are all branches of the church. Decorative “grapes on a vine” use multiple resources to craft creative vines. And a “hands-on” project uses the hands and fingers of students to create a grape picture. Pluck one off the vine and have a “bunch” of fun!

Suggested Worship Song: Abide With Me

John 15:1-8 Bible Verses/story to Reference:

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.”    -John 15:1-8

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. -Galatians 5:22-23
