Learning from God, Family, and His Creation
Welcome to the month of September! This month is very special. Many children are going back to school, and it’s a time to learn new things. Just like at school, we also learn here in Sunday School—about God’s love, His Word, and how we can live for Him every day.
September is also the time when we celebrate Grandparents Day. God has given us grandparents and older people in our families and church to love us, guide us, and teach us about faith. The Bible reminds us to honor and respect them.
And as the seasons begin to change, we remember that God is the one who made the world and all the seasons. Just like the leaves change colors, God is always doing something new in our lives.
So this month, our theme is about learning from God, honoring our families, and celebrating His creation. Let’s get ready to grow in wisdom, love, and thankfulness together!
“Walking in Wisdom” (Proverbs 2:6)
God Teaches Us Through His Word and People
Proverbs 2:6
For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding
- Main Idea: Wisdom comes from God, and we can find it by reading the Bible and listening to the wise people He has placed in our lives.
- Bible Story: The story of King Solomon asking God for wisdom (1 Kings 3:5-14). Solomon could have asked for riches or power, but he knew that wisdom was the most important gift.
- Lesson Focus: Teach kids that wisdom isn’t just about being smart; it’s about making good choices that honor God. The Bible is our main guide for these choices, and we can also learn from parents, teachers, and church leaders.
- Activities:
- “Wise or Unwise?” Game: Present scenarios (e.g., “A friend wants to copy your homework. What’s a wise choice?”) and have kids decide if the action is wise or unwise.
- “Wisdom Scroll” Craft: Kids can decorate a paper scroll and write down a favorite Bible verse about wisdom, like Proverbs 2:6.

“Honoring God and Our Families” (Ephesians 6:1-3)
Respecting Parents, Grandparents, and Learning Together
Ephesians 6
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise:
3 “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.
- Main Idea: Honoring our family members is a way of honoring God. This means showing respect, listening, and being a helpful part of the family team.
- Bible Story: The story of Jesus as a child in the Temple (Luke 2:41-52). Even though Jesus was God’s Son, He still honored and obeyed His parents, Mary and Joseph.
- Lesson Focus: Connect the Fifth Commandment (“Honor your father and your mother”) to daily life. Teach kids that respecting their family members is a direct command from God, and it leads to a blessed life.
- Activities:
- “Family Thankfulness” Circle: Go around the room and have each child name one thing they love or are thankful for about their family.
- Family “Helping Hands” Craft: Kids can trace their hand on paper and write ways they can help their family inside, like “set the table” or “make my bed.”

“God’s Beautiful Seasons” (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
Trusting God in Every Change
(Ecclesiastes 3:1)
To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven.
- Main Idea: Just like the seasons of the year, our lives have different seasons of change. We can trust that God is in control through every single one.
- Bible Story: The story of Joseph (Genesis 37-50). Joseph experienced many seasons in his life—from being a favored son to a prisoner, and finally to a leader in Egypt. Through it all, God was faithful.
- Lesson Focus: Help kids understand that change is a natural part of life, whether it’s a new school, a new teacher, or a new home. God’s presence is constant, and He has a purpose for every season.
- Activities:
- “Seasons of My Life” Timeline: Provide paper and markers for kids to draw a timeline of their life, highlighting different “seasons” or big changes they’ve experienced.
- Four Seasons Art: Have kids create a simple art project representing the four seasons, discussing how God is a part of each one.

Jesus, Our Teacher (John 13:13)
Back to School with God’s Word
John 13:13
You call me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am.
- Main Idea: Jesus is the ultimate teacher. He teaches us about God, how to love others, and how to live a life that pleases Him.
- Bible Story: The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). Jesus taught His followers about living with love, humility, and forgiveness.
- Lesson Focus: As kids go back to school with new teachers, remind them that Jesus is their most important teacher. His Word, the Bible, is the greatest lesson plan ever written, and it guides us in all areas of our lives.
- Activities:
- “Classroom Rules” Discussion: Discuss how Jesus’s teachings (e.g., “love your neighbor”) are the best rules for a happy life, in and out of the classroom.
- Bible “Textbook” Cover: Kids can decorate a binder or folder with images and words that remind them that the Bible is their most important “textbook” for life.
