Sunday School Lessons for October: Jesus is the Hero and the Light of the World (John 8:12).

In a World Full of Darkness, Jesus is the Light John 8

October is a wonderful month for children’s ministry because it naturally connects to themes of harvest, change, and overcoming fear.

While there is no single major Christian holiday like Easter or Christmas, the season offers powerful, visual themes to explore foundational Biblical truths.

This is the month full of changeโ€”leaves turn colors, the air grows cooler, and the days get shorter. But even as the world around us grows darker, we are reminded of a powerful truth: Jesus is our Light!

In a season when many people focus on fear and darkness, October is the perfect time to teach children that God calls us to shine His light everywhere we go. Just as a lamp brightens a dark room, kids can brighten the world with love, kindness, and faith in Jesus.

October Sunday School Lesson

Jesus is Our Light Sunday School Activities John 8:12

Bible Verse: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” โ€” John 8:12

The Hero Lesson: A hero is someone who saves people from danger. Jesus is our ultimate hero because He saves us from the danger of darkness.

The Darkness Dilemma (Activity & Story)

The Darkness Demonstration

  1. Preparation: Bring a flashlight and have the kids sit close together.
  2. Activity: Briefly turn off the main lights (or dim them significantly) and close the shades so the room is very dark.
  3. Discussion: Ask the kids: “How does it feel? Can you find your shoes? Can you see my face? Darkness makes it hard to know where to go or what to do.”
  4. The Reveal: Turn on the flashlight and shine it around. Ask: “What did the light do?” (It showed us the way! It helped us see!)

The Bible Story: The Blind Man (John 9:1โ€“12)

  • Tell the story of Jesus healing the man born blind.
  • Hero Connection: Jesus didn’t just give the man physical light (sight); He gave him the spiritual light of knowing who God is. Jesus literally saved him from a lifetime of darkness.
  • Say: “Jesus did this miracle to show everyone He wasn’t just telling them He was the Light, He was proving it! He can take away any darkness in our livesโ€”the darkness of fear, of sadness, or of making bad choices.”

Read this bible verse John 9: 1-15

1 As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.

2 โ€œRabbi,โ€ his disciples asked him, โ€œwhy was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins or his parentsโ€™ sins?โ€

3 โ€œIt was not because of his sins or his parentsโ€™ sins,โ€ Jesus answered. โ€œThis happened so the power of God could be seen in him.

4 We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work.

5 But while I am here in the world, I am the light of the world.โ€

6 Then he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread the mud over the blind manโ€™s eyes.

7 He told him, โ€œGo wash yourself in the pool of Siloamโ€ (Siloam means โ€œsentโ€). So the man went and washed and came back seeing!

8 His neighbors and others who knew him as a blind beggar asked each other, โ€œIsnโ€™t this the man who used to sit and beg?โ€

9 Some said he was, and others said, โ€œNo, he just looks like him!โ€ But the beggar kept saying, โ€œYes, I am the same one!โ€

10 They asked, โ€œWho healed you? What happened?โ€

11 He told them, โ€œThe man they call Jesus made mud and spread it over my eyes and told me, โ€˜Go to the pool of Siloam and wash yourself.โ€™ So I went and washed, and now I can see!โ€

12 โ€œWhere is he now?โ€ they asked. โ€œI donโ€™t know,โ€ he replied.

13 Then they took the man who had been blind to the Pharisees,

14 because it was on the Sabbath that Jesus had made the mud and healed him.

15 The Pharisees asked the man all about it. So he told them, โ€œHe put the mud over my eyes, and when I washed it away, I could see!โ€

How to Follow the Light

Explain that following the light means choosing to look at Jesus and listen to His words instead of the darkness around us.

The Darkness (What makes us trip?)The Light (What Jesus tells us to do?)
Darkness of FearBe Brave! (Joshua 1:9)
Darkness of LyingTell the Truth! (Ephesians 4:25)
Darkness of Being MeanBe Kind! (Ephesians 4:32)
Darkness of Forgetting GodRemember God! (Read your Bible and pray.)

The Lighthouse Analogy

  • “The world is like a big, dark ocean, and we are like little boats. The waves and storms (fears and problems) can toss us around. But Jesus is our Lighthouse! A lighthouse stands tall and never moves. It shines a bright, steady light so the boats know how to get home safely.”
  • “When we follow the Light, we know we are safe and we are heading in the right direction.”

Closing Prayer

“Dear Jesus, thank you for being the hero and the true Light of the world. We don’t want to walk in the darkness of fear or bad choices. Help us to keep our eyes on you, like following a Lighthouse, so we can always walk in your light. Amen.”

Hero Academy: 4-Week Childrenโ€™s Ministry Curriculum (October 2026)

๐Ÿ’ก Big Idea: Jesus trains everyday kids to live like Bible heroesโ€”brave, resilient, wise, and protectiveโ€”so they can love others and keep Godโ€™s mission going.

๐Ÿ“– Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 16:13โ€“14 โ€” โ€œBe on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.โ€

Shine in the Darkness (John 1:6-8, 19-28) Printable Bible Lesson & Sunday School Activities

Jesus Christ is the light of the world, and gives us hope in the darkness of lifeโ€™s challenges. During the season of Advent, we celebrate His coming and remember how John the Baptist came as a messenger to prepare the way for Him. This lesson reflects on John and how, like him, we can share the good news of Jesus and tell others about Him, spreading His light. Christmas lights remind us of His light, and also act to illustrate how that hope and joy can be contagious to other people.
